Top Five Ways to Keep Your Mattress New and Protected

An average human being spends one-third of his life sleeping, which means we spend a significant time on a mattress. A few things determine the durability and longevity of a mattress, such as the type of material used, quality of the fabric, how well you take of it, etc.

Typically, the right mattress should last eight to ten years, and excellent foam beds can last up to 13 to 15 years with proper care and maintenance. The coils and foam mattresses, also known as hybrid beds, fall somewhere between. This whole thing depends upon the material used and the manufacturing process.

We cannot keep our mattress forever. However, its life can be extended by keeping them clean. We are going to list some heads-up tips to protect your mattress and retain its quality.

Use Mattress Protectors

Using a mattress protector for any kind of mattress, be it for a king-size bed, queen size mattress, or twin bed, is a game-changer. Unwanted accidents or spills can happen any time, and using a waterproof protector makes sure that nothing will ruin the insides of the mattress.

Moreover, liquids and bodily oils & fluids, skin flakes can make their way to the mattress through duvets or bed sheets. It can’t be seen, but it sure happens, and a good protector restricts them from spoiling the bed.

Various protectors are available in the market at different price ranges and sizes. Make sure you know the dimensions before buying one. Also, do not go for an oversized one otherwise you will feel the protector moving underneath your bed sheets.

Do not Bounce on the Bed

Sorry Five Little Monkeys, but jumping on the bed is neither safe nor suitable for the mattress. Bouncing simply puts unnecessary pressure on the mattress, damaging its insides. Some individuals install box springs underneath the bed frame, which are not ideal for handling kids (or adults) jumping on it.

Avoid Eating in the Bed

Snacking on the bed might sound harmless and ordinary, but it really isn’t. Tiny food crumbs left on the bed after eating, invite bugs and other small insects. Ants and cockroaches need a tiny bit of food to survive.

If you are going to have your meal on the bed, no matter what, then ensure that you clean your sheet after eating. Also, make sure you frequently change your bed sheet. Ideally, you should be changing your sheets every three days.

Avoid Pets to Sleep with You

Dogs and cats are human’s good companions, and people often let them sleep over the bed. But as you invite them to bed, you are also inviting potential germs, bugs, and bacteria clinging to their bodies.

Parasites, such as roundworms, hookworms, and other equally nasty insects, are commonly found on a dog’s or cat’s body. These parasites lay eggs on your fur friend’s hair, which can be easily shed onto your bed sheet. Do you want to sleep with those eggs starting to hatch right next to you?

Deodorize Your Mattress

It is recommended to deodorize your mattress with baking soda after every two months or quarterly. Do not hesitate to use a one-pound box of baking soda and leave it there for 24-hours. Try to expose your mattress to the sunlight, as it will help to enhance the sanitizing process. Make sure you vacuum it every few weeks.
